North Park San Diego

The up-and-coming neighborhood of North Park is adjacent to Hillcrest and north of downtown. Considered an urban neighborhood, North Park San Diego is a fantastic neighborhood filled with a multitude of condo buildings and sizes as well as craftsman style homes and row homes. The iconic North Park sign can be seen at 30th and University and sub-neighborhoods in the area include Burlingame, Altadena, and the Morley Field District. With Balboa Park to the southeast and Mission Hills to the north, North Park offers convenience to surrounding areas as well as a unique culture within this trendy community. Forbes magazine named North Park as one of America’s best “hipster” neighborhoods, remarking that “culturally diverse North Park is home to Craftsman cottages, cafes and diners, coffee shops, several microbreweries, boutiques, and the North Park Farmer’s Market.”

Historically, the North Park area was purchase by James Monroe Hartley in 1893 to transform the area into a lemon grove. Hartley dubbed the area “Hartley’s North Park” and the name stuck. North Park was also part of the Class 1 streetcars, connecting this neighborhood with Balboa Park, Mission Hills, Hillcrest and more. The North Park Historical Society maintains a website on historic architecture, people and events in the area. 30th and University became the hub of North Park in the early 1900s, setting the stage for the hub of North Park today. The first residential and commercial developments were built in 1911 by Hartley’s eldest son. North Park is also home to many homes built by renowned architect David Owen Dryden, and Dryden Historic District is the aftermath of his unique and distinct architecture.

Median housing prices for the area are $676,626, which is fantastic and offers buyers diverse property options. Average rental prices are $1,112 per month, making North Park a more affordable rental option for many San Diegans looking for a trendy urban neighborhood with retail and restaurants within walking distance. North Park is changing rapidly, offering buyers a unique opportunity to purchase property knowing that the shifting market will allow a nice appreciation of their home value. North Park is a highly pedestrian area, making this area perfect if you are looking for great amenities within walking distance. Residents of North Park are primarily upper-middle class, mostly single and young couples and upwardly mobile.
